Catherine E. “Katie” (Jarkiewicz) Gruber, 99, of Altoona, passed away at Graystone Manor at Bellmeade Sunday morning. Katie was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Andrew and Ann (Iwan) Jarkiewicz.
Her husband, Willibald "Willie" Gruber, whom she married on June 5, 1976, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, preceded her in death in August of 2003.
Katie is survived by two stepsons, Thomas (Patricia) Gruber and William Gruber; two grandchildren, Marc (Becky) Gruber and Melissa (Brian) Weikert; three step grandchildren: William Hopkins, Ryan Hopkins and Sarah Helton; great-grandchildren: Roslyn Gruber, Emma and Raelynn Weikert and Callen Helton.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Ann Cawley and Sophie Marshall; and a brother, Frank “Jake” Jarkiewicz.
Katie was a 1940 graduate of Altoona High School class of 1940 and spent 16 years as a crossing guard at Baker School. She enjoyed going to polka and waltz dances with Willie. They also enjoyed bus trips to Atlantic City, N.J.
Friends will be received from 10 a.m. until the noon funeral service Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021, at Stanley J. Krish Funeral Home Inc., 1204 17th St., Altoona, with Pastor Scott Decker officiating. Interment at Calvary Cemetery.
