Helena Victoria Kowalski-Frederick, 98, Altoona, formerly of Newburg, died Monday morning at Golden Living Center-Hillview.
She was born in Kellytown, daughter of the late Joseph and Victoria (Ornalik ) Tomchek. She was first married to Chester J. Kowalski on Sept. 4, 1937, at St. Mary Magdalene Parish Church. He died Dec. 11, 1949. She then married Jacob W. Frederick on Oct. 10, 1958, at SS. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on Sept. 29, 1979.
Surviving are three sons: Chester J. Kowalski and wife, Mary, Thaddeus "Ted" Kowalski and Paul A. Kowalski and wife, Emma, all of Altoona; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Francis of Avoca, Mich., and Florian of Venice, Fla.
She was preceded in death by three brothers: Joseph, Thaddeus and Stanley; and two sisters: Henrietta Babick and Mary Swisz.
Mrs. Kowalski-Frederick was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church and a former member of SS. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church, St. Hedwig's Society, Golden Nuggets and was a senior companion.
Helena enjoyed cooking and baking.
Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011, at Stanley J. Krish Funeral Home Inc., 1204 17th St., Altoona. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 12th Avenue and 20th Street, Altoona, by Monsignor Stanley Carson.
Committal will be at SS. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Cemetery.
