Richard B. Lill, Sr. 90, of Altoona, passed away Sunday evening surrounded by his wife and family at his residence.
Richard was born in Johnstown, the son of the late Robert J, and Rose E. (Gallagher) Lill. Survived by his wife: Rose Rita (Kesslak) Lill whom he married on December 29, 1956, in Johnstown, five daughters: Mary T. (Paul) George, Rose M. Higazy (David Deich), Anne C. Lill, Nancy L. Lill and Diana K. (Thomas) Bogan, two sons: Robert A. Lill (Stacy Hale), and Richard B. Lill Jr. (Caitlyn Shane); Twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Richard graduated from Johnstown Catholic High School class of 1952. He served during the Korean War, in the Army from 12/9/1954 to 12/7/1956 as a specialist. Richard earned a bachelor's degree in education from the Indiana State Normal Teachers' College, followed by a master’s degree in Industrial Relations from St. Francis University.
He initially worked as a public school educator assisting children with disabilities in the United Joint School District. After a short period, Richard became a Wage and Hour Investigator, employed by the federal government, in the Labor, Wage & Hour Division. After his retirement, he provided substitute teaching for the multiple school districts in Blair and Cambria counties. Richard then took a position as an intake worker for the Blair County CYS. After leaving that post, he read to kindergarten students in the Altoona Public Schools.
Richard was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and sang in the choir there. He also published the childrens' book "Gus".
Richard was a member of Bavarian Aid Society, Altoona Mannerchor. His singing group provided entertainment throughout the community and participated in competitions throughout the state, over a number of years.
Thank you to all family and friends, doctors, nurses, PTs, OTs, home health aides, AMED, staff at UPMC Altoona, UPMC Pittsburgh Passavant, Encompass Health Altoona, Encompass Mount Nittany, Stanley Krish, and everyone who assisted in Richard's life journey.
At Richard's request there will be no visitation or services. In lieu of flowers or donations, kindly read to a child. The family would also like to share this statement of Richard's, "Always be kind and help others". Private inurnment will be held at Forest Lawn, Johnstown.
